It differs by extension

Some registries publish the registration date, the registrar and the expiry; others publish little more than the fact that the name exists.

The registry's own answer

We print exactly the lines the registry sends, in their own shape. We neither add to them nor reorder them.

What it does not tell you

Whether the name can be ordered here, and for how much. The domain search answers that, with a price.

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is the public record each domain registry keeps. It shows what the registry publishes about a name: when it was registered, how long it runs, and which registrar holds it.

How does it work?

We ask the registry of that extension directly and print what it answers. We add nothing to it and interpret nothing in it. If the registry does not answer, we say so and draw no conclusion from it.

Common questions about WHOIS

What does a WHOIS lookup show?

What the extension's registry publishes about the name — and that differs a great deal between extensions. Some carry the registration date, the registrar and the expiry; some carry little more than the fact that the name exists. How much is visible is the registry's decision, not ours.
No. This page shows what a registry holds about a name that already exists. Whether a name can be ordered here, and for how much, is answered by the domain search and by nothing else.
Because we do not hold a registry server for every extension. Where we do not, we say so and never ask the registry at all. That is not a failure, and it says nothing about the name itself.
We build no database from it and we do not analyse it. We hold the answer for a few minutes so that a repeated lookup does not burden the registry server needlessly, and then drop it.
