What is DNS propagation?
DNS propagation is the time it takes for DNS changes to become visible to different resolvers. Resolvers cache answers until their time to live (TTL) expires.
How long does it take?
Some changes appear within minutes; others can take 24–48 hours depending on previous TTL values and caching. Lowering a TTL just before a change may not help if resolvers have already cached the old value.
What should you check?
- Confirm the record was saved in the authoritative DNS zone.
- Check the record type and value: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, or TXT.
- Confirm the domain uses the nameservers where you made the change.
- Check from more than one resolver or network.
- For email issues, verify MX and related SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records.
When should you contact support?
If the records are correct at the authoritative nameservers but the issue persists beyond the expected TTL, contact your DNS or hosting provider with the domain, changed record, approximate change time, and error message.
