1. Choose a domain name

Pick a name that is easy to remember, spell, and say aloud. For a business, a name close to your brand can help customers find you. Avoid confusing spellings, unnecessary hyphens, and names that could be mistaken for another organisation.

Before registering, check that the name does not infringe another party's trademark or other rights. A domain being available does not automatically mean you are legally entitled to use it.

2. Choose a domain extension

The extension is the part after the final dot, such as .com, .es or .eu. Some extensions are open to most applicants, while others have eligibility or residency requirements. Choose an extension that fits your audience, location, and plans.

3. Check availability and register

Use the domain search on a registrar's website to check whether your preferred name is available. If it is, select the registration period offered and provide the requested details. If it is unavailable, try a different name or extension rather than choosing a confusing variation of an established brand.

4. Enter accurate contact details

Registrars and domain registries require certain contact information. Provide accurate details and keep them up to date, because verification requests and important renewal notices may be sent to these contacts. Privacy or proxy services may be available for some extensions, subject to the applicable rules.

5. Review the price and renewal terms

Check the initial registration price, renewal price, registration period, and any optional extras before confirming. Promotional prices may apply only to the first term. Enable automatic renewal if it suits you, and make sure the payment method remains valid.

6. Configure DNS for your website or email

Registering a domain does not automatically create a website or mailbox. To connect services, configure the domain's DNS records or use the nameservers supplied by your hosting or email provider. DNS changes can take time to become visible worldwide.

7. Keep control of your domain

Save your registrar login details securely, enable two-factor authentication where available, and monitor renewal notices. Make sure the account email address is one you can access. If you later move to another provider, check the transfer requirements and any transfer lock before starting.
