Before you start

Make a backup before changing a live database. Check that the SQL file comes from a trusted source and that you have selected the correct database. Importing data can overwrite or add records and may affect a live website.

Export a database

  1. Open phpMyAdmin from your hosting control panel.
  2. Select the correct database in the left sidebar.
  3. Choose Export.
  4. Select Quick for a straightforward SQL export, or Custom if you need to select tables or adjust options.
  5. Choose SQL as the format and start the export.
  6. Store the downloaded file securely. It may contain personal or confidential data.

Import an SQL file

  1. Create the destination database and database user first, if they do not already exist.
  2. Open phpMyAdmin and select the destination database. Confirm the name carefully before continuing.
  3. Choose Import, select the SQL file from your computer, and review the format settings.
  4. Start the import and wait for the completion message. Do not refresh or close the page while a large import is running.
  5. Check the tables and test the application. If you imported a website database, confirm that the application configuration uses the correct database credentials.

Common import problems

  • File too large or request timed out: Use a smaller export where possible, split the SQL file safely, or ask your hosting provider about supported import methods and limits.
  • Unknown database or permission error: Confirm the destination database and that the database user has the necessary privileges.
  • Table already exists: You may be importing into a database that already contains data. Do not drop tables unless you have a verified backup and understand the impact.
  • Character encoding problems: Confirm the database and export encoding are compatible with the application.
  • Import succeeds but the website fails: Check application settings, table prefixes, PHP/application logs and whether the database version is compatible.

Never share database dumps publicly. If the import fails, give support the exact error message and the approximate file size, but do not send database passwords.
